It is coming up on a year since we moved to California. And I figured, in celebration of that, I would share some of my favorite things about this state. I really love it here. I mean REALLY love it. It has everything I could ever want – ocean, mountains, state parks, cities, country, wine, yoga… I could go on and on. I know, I know, other states have some of the same things too. But, California is just so beautiful and so exotic to me. The rest of the post will be photos. That way, I don’t have to describe everything.
The new year just crashed into me all of a sudden. I spent Thanksgiving working nights at my amazing job (which I will talk about in my other blog: A Girl and Her Shiba). Then Christmas just sneaked up on me because Thanksgiving was so late this year. We went back to Wisconsin for Christmas to spend time with family. Then, for all of the New Year’s celebrations, I worked nights again ( Me Kissing Dogs). Throughout the craziness of being with family, working, school, and the holidays, I didn’t really get to think about the year ahead. And, every time I did try, my brain was all muddled. I couldn’t focus on what I might want this year to hold. But, now that January is almost half was over, this year has become a little more clear to me. Now, I know we don’t know what the future holds, but I have a feeling this year is going to be amazing. I am so looking forward to it! I am looking forward to going new places, meeting new people, having different experiences, furthering my education, and learning more about my passions. I can’t wait to tell you all about the awesome things that happen this year. I hope that this year holds amazing things for each of you as well.

I’ve never been so overwhelmed by Christ’s love. He is risen. He is risen for you. For me. For each person no matter what they’ve done. I’m beautiful and clean in His eyes. He died so I could live. It’s been 10 days since I ended my 10 day juice fast. Honestly, it hasn’t been easy. Everyday I think to myself, “Self, you should stick to a liquid juice diet.” Why? Well, because I have a super sensitive digestive system, I am not patient, and I have a super sensitive digestive system. I got off the juice fast and started to add solids in slowly by drinking smoothies and making soups. Then I would eat salads and cut up fruits and veggies. Then, last Saturday, I combined veggies with an apple cider vinegar drink… that was NOT good. I was bed ridden and couldn’t even get up for four hours. I had such severe pains in my stomach and digestive tract. Ever since then, I really have had to watch what I eat. I have to be careful not to go over board on raw veggies, and at the same time, I can’t eat too many foods with gluten and sugar in them (Like pasta, bread, ect). I’ve decided to become completely gluten free now and be serious to cut out those foods. I felt like I had a rock in my stomach after eating bread and gnocchi last night for dinner… it was delicious, but not worth it. Overall though, my body feels great when I keep eating raw and slightly cooked veggies and fruits. I am enjoying making raw foods so much!!!! Check out http://malandbri.wordpress.com for a delicious raw cupcake recipe! I started juicing again this morning. I love fresh juice I’ve realized… a lot. I need to keep juicing for my health, and because it is absolutely delicious! The juice I made this morning was introduced to me by my dear friend Caroline (who also is a fantastic photographer in the Charleston area. Check her out at http://www.carolinero.com). She says she likes it because it’s a yummy twist on orange juice! I would agree! I liked it because it wasn’t so acidic-y as orange juice. I’m calling it:
Twisted Orange Juice
1 sweet potato
Juice together and enjoy!!!
So for lunch today, I was dying for some soup. I love soup. I had TONS of veggies in my fridge and a chicken breast in my freezer… I figured, why not make soup!?! I make soup by just throwing things into the pot. I don’t measure or count things, I just toss. So, I will be giving you the ingredients, but not the measurements for them because I just don’t know them. I call this:
Vegetable Lemon Chicken Soup
Sweet potato, diced
Zucchini, halved and sliced
Kale, de-veined and chopped into small pieces
Lemon, sliced and de-seeded
Seasoning to taste (salt, pepper, ect)
Boil chicken breast in a large pot of water until chicken is cooked through. Take chicken out and scoop off the boiled bits and foam on the top. Put all of the veggies into the pot except for the kale, zucchini and lemon. Simmer for 10 minutes (Or until desired doneness). While simmering, dice the chicken breast. Once it’s simmered, add the kale, zucchini, lemon, chicken breast, and seasonings. Turn off stove and place a lid on pot so the kale can soften up. Serve and Enjoy!!! *I added nutritional yeast to the bowls when I served the soup*
So… exciting results from the detox!!! Let me tell you, it was so nice to get up this morning and not have to drink juice or clean my juicer!!! I made a nice big smoothie which was very yummy. It’s called Peaches and Greens:
3 c chopped frozen peaches
2 c chopped spinach
1 c sliced banana
1 c almond milk (or any kind of nut milk)
Put the milk in first and then the rest of the ingredients. Blend and enjoy.
Anyways, here are the stats for our 10 day juice fast:
Cost Total: $432.81
Cost Per Person: $216.41
Cost Per Day: $43.28
Cost Per Person Per Day: $21.64
Now, keep in mind I used all organic fruits and vegetables, and it is March so produce is a little more expensive than it would be in the summer. Also, I bought cold-pressed juices at Whole Foods for Ryan while he was at work. For each 16 oz bottle it costed about $5. I got enough for at least 2 bottles a day for the whole week he was at work (stats below). That adds to the cost of the juicing.
Main Produce We Went Through:
Apples: 27 lbs
Carrots: 15 lbs
Oranges: 12 lbs
Celery: 15 bunches
Kale: 11 bunches
Cold-pressed juices: 19 (16 oz) bottles
Now for the weight loss:
Ryan: 124.4 lbs
Me: 153.2 lbs
Ryan: 117.0 lbs (-7.4 lbs)
Me: 146.0 lbs (-7.2 lbs)
I know I’ve been on a health-kick lately, but living in California has really got me excited about being healthy and eco-friendly! I have never had a garden before, but I figured I’d try my hand at it. My husband helped me build a raised garden bed. It’s 8x8x8. In hindsight, we should have done two 4×4 garden beds because it would have been easier to reach the center plants. Oh well. I am proud of our nice garden bed despite having to crawl into the middle of it to care for the center plants!
Monday, I planted my vegetables. I used all organic soil and seeds. I started my tomatoes about a month ago so I had some nice plants to start with. I also planted bell peppers, cucumbers, yellow squash, and peas. I will be planting garlic and hopefully green onions but in a separate containers.
